In Matthew 24 Jesus answers His disciples’ questions of: 1. When will the destruction of the temple be?, 2. What will be the sign of His coming?, and 3. What will be the sign of the end of the age? Jesus answers in three stages: 1.Twelve signs describing the beginning of sorrows or birth pains, 2. Five signs after the birth pains have begun, 3. Five signs describing the Great Tribulation, and 4. the events and trends surrounding the Great Tribulation before the Second Coming. The abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel is most significant to knowing that the Great Tribulation has begun (Mt. 24:15; Dan. 9). The chapter ends with pastoral parables: 1. The parable of the fig tree that commands believers to recognize the generation of the Lord’s return though the day and hour cannot be known, 2. The parable of the thief that exhorts believers to watch and pray for Jesus’ Second Coming with diligence, and 3. The parable of the faithful and wise servant describing the different responses of Christian leaders as His Second Coming approaches.
